The penultimate episode of The Mandalorian season 2 put Bill Burr’s character of Migs Mayfeld in the spotlight, and while it was not the expected route for the show to take, Burr did a fantastic job of turning Mayfeld into a fan favorite character.
This week we are going to dig a little into Mayfeld himself and some of the important post-ROTJ events that were mentioned by Mayfeld to his former commanding officer.
Migs Mayfeld
Before striking out on his own during the formation of the new Republic, Migs Mayfeld was a sharpshooter in the Imperial Military. Since this is a brand new character to the Star Wars universe, little is known about his military history aside from what he revealed in season 2 episode 7 of The Mandalorian.
We learned that Mayfeld was deployed to the planet Burnin Konn during the final days of the Empire. Unfortunately for Mayfeld and his comrades, nearly his entire division was killed during the execution of Operation Cinder on Burning Konn. Mayfeld was able to escape the tragedy and eventually joined up with Ranzar Malk’s criminal organization.
His employment under Malk lead directly to our first introduction to Mayfeld in season 1 episode 6 of The Mandalorian.
Operation Cinder
Operation Cinder was a part of Emperor Palpatine’s Contingency plan to ensure the Empire did not survive in the case of his death. Operation Cinder called for many planets and Imperial military personnel to be culled to ensure weak elements of the Empire did not survive. Battlefront 2’s main character, Iden Versio, was tasked with carrying out parts of Operation Cinder before she left her father’s command and defected to the Rebellion.
After Operation Cinder was carried out, it was Palpatine’s plan for the Imperial Remnant to regroup and reform in the Unknown Regions under the command of Gallius Rax. Unfortunately, Rax was killed by during the battle of Jakku by Grand Admiral Rae Sloane of the Imperial Navy. Sloane would eventually enter the Unknown Regions with Brendol and Armitage Hux to being the formation of the First Order.
Morak
Morak is a new planet to the Star Wars universe that served as a secret mining base for the Imperial Remnant during the formation of the New Republic. The primary mineral being mined on Mork was rhydonium, and explosive ore used to create weaponry for the Imperial Remnant.
