The Skywalker Saga has come to a close on the big screen, but there is still content to be had for those of you seeking answers or context behind some of the main players left in the SW timeline that we are so familiar with.

Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren comic series is the perfect place to start for people looking for additional content. The series picks up Ben Solo’s story the moment after he is attacked by Luke at the Jedi Academy while also giving context into the Knights of Ren pre-Kylo.

The Ben arc of the first issue is pretty straightforward and gives you a story that people could easily expect to see after the hut came crashing down on Luke. Ben is in a very frenzied state and immediately clings to the one thing that has been constant for him now that his family ties have been completely severed, Snoke, while shunning the peers that have been around him at the Jedi Academy. The picture of how Ben becomes Kylo is starting to form nicely so far.

The parallel Knights of Ren storyline establishes the sinister force as basically a group of Ronin, force users with no master. They are loyal to no one person, and they essentially follow the way of the blade. They allow the force to guide them in the most instinctual and visceral sense. We find also out the origins of the ‘Ren’ in The Knights of Ren and see a bit of their recruitment efforts as they attempt to increase their numbers by hunting down force sensitive beings across the galaxy.

Overall, this issue of The Rise of Kylo Ren is a strong opening to the series that follows an expected path at some points and explores new ideas and characters in others. It will be very interesting to see how these 2 parallel storylines move towards an intersection point later in the series.

A solid start to what is sure to be a very intriguing series about the last ancestral Skywalker.
