E3 is upon us and we all know what that means for Star Wars fans, we finally get our first look at Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order!
Respawn Entertainment’s Vince Zampella and Stig Asmussen sat down with Greg Miller to bring us the world’s first look at Fallen Order’s gameplay and give some insight into the characters, the setting, and the story.
The 15 minute piece of gameplay takes place approximately 3 hours into the game, according to Asmussen, which means our main character, Cal Kestis, is no longer a piddling padawan. He has built up his skills and is taking on the Empire head on.
Pretty early on in the demo, we run into a very familiar face, Saw Gurrera. He is leading a rebel group on Kashyyyk that is attempting to liberate a group of enslaved Wookies. After that brief intro, we jump right into the gameplay.
Along the way, Cal encounters numerous enemies. Stormtroopers, Scout Troopers, Flame Troopers, the brand new Purge Troopers, and even some giant spiders. The exploration looks very fun and intuitive, and the combat feels like it should when you are playing a padawan who has taught himself to survive and fight the Empire without the training of a master.
After the demo, Zampella and Asmussen confirmed a few things. Fallen Order is canon, of course, and was written with the assistance of Lucasfilm. There will be no dark or light side options within this game, so Cal will be 100% Jedi all the way through, and we have the possibility of seeing Cal in other pieces of Star Wars canon. Asmussen said that they needed to keep the character a Jedi “so he can be used in other places.” Very interesting addition there. Matt and I speculated that with a primary title like Star Wars Jedi and the subtitle Fallen Order, we could be looking at the spiritual successor to the Star Wars Jedi Knight series of games that released in the early 2000’s.
Overall, the game looks fantastic. It is a healthy mix between some of the best action adventure games on the market and also features some fun new mechanics that have never been seen before in a Star Wars game. The best way to describe it to someone is a mixture between Uncharted and The Force Unleashed with some distinctly Respawn flare.
There may be some more coming from this game in the coming days, so keep your eyes and ears tuned into Star Wars Time for the latest!
