For the first time yet it appears as if Rian Johnson isn’t so confident that his planned Star Wars trilogy will get made after all.

In a recent interview conducted by BANG Showbiz, Rian is asked about his excitement for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which he’s excited to be a fan for again, but when asked about when fans will be able to see his next Star Wars films, he got a little awkward. He also used words that hint for the first time that he’s not so confident that his trilogy will get made after all.

Johnson said:

“Well we’ll see, I mean I’m still talking to Lucasfilm, they’re figuring out what they’re doing, and we’ll see what happens, but you know I’d be thrilled if it happens but I’m doing my own stuff too.”

Using words like, “if,” and phrases like, “well we’ll see,” definitely hint at the fact that his trilogy deal with Lucasfilm may not be as concrete as first reported a few years ago. Also, if you look at his body posture, he seems overly uncomfortable answering the question, and the him-hawing and glances away also may reveal that he’s worried that the door may be closing on his trilogy.

I personally didn’t mind TLJ and enjoyed aspects of it, and I was down for seeing what Rian would do without legacy characters, but if Lucasfilm does pull the plug, I’m not going to say that I’m surprised. In the end, Lucasfilm is in the money making business, and if they fear the Fandom Menace enough, they could cave on their artistic desires in favor of being safe and ensuring at least a billion in ticket sales.
