Yesterday the world got to see the D23 special look at Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and one scene in particular has the fandom foaming out the mouth. This scene of course is the shot of what has been dubbed Dark Side Rey, or other variants like Fallen Rey or Clone Rey. We’ve dubbed her DSR, mostly because I’m lazy asshole, and that’s easier to type and say.

Anyway, one aspect of DSR that has fans talking is her double-bladed lightsaber. It’s not a traditional staff style lightsaber like Darth Maul’s, rather it has a hinge and flips open like a switchblade, so some fans thought its design to be a little curious. Well, it turns out that this isn’t the first double-bladed hinged lightsaber to be featured in canon Star Wars, so there is precedence for lightsabers of this type.

In Star Wars Rebels’ second season, Kanan goes to a temple and is confronted by a Temple Guardian. The Guardian brandishes none other than a double-bladed hinged lightsaber! It’s nearly an identical design to DSR’s, albeit the blade color is yellow instead of red.

I just think it’s cool that another item from animated Star Wars has found a place in live-action Star Wars, so wanted to share the clip, which you can see below. Oh, and watch Rebels if you haven’t, it’s stellar.
