The Star Wars cinematic universe is basically dead at this point. There hasn’t been a movie released in theaters in over 3 years, multiple movie projects have been shelved or canceled completely, and there aren’t any approved films on the horizon.
Damon Lindelof is one of the creators that has been linked to an upcoming Star Wars film for the last year, but according to Lindelof, the likelihood of his Star Wars project actually happening is starting to dwindle.
“I will just say, that for reasons that I can’t get into on this Sunday morning, on this day, the degree of difficulty is extremely, extremely, extremely high. If it can’t be great, it shouldn’t exist. That’s all I’ll say, because I have the same association with it as you do, which is, it’s the first movie I saw sitting in my dad’s lap, four years old, May of ’77. I think it’s possible that sometimes when you hold something in such high reverence and esteem, you start to get in the kitchen and you just go, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t be cooking. Maybe I should just be eating.’ We’ll just leave it at that point.”

UPDATE
According to Jeff Sneider, who has been dripping out rumors for Damon’s project for months now, Damon and Justin Britt-Gibson have now left the project, but Director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy remains attached. Apparently, fans will be provided details about this project in a few weeks at Celebration London.
If Lindelof is right and his project doesn’t happen, he will join the likes of Patty Jenkins, Kevin Feige, and Rian Johnson on the roster of SW movie folks that had their projects either completely canceled or indefinitely shelved.

With no movies on the horizon and creators falling out of the Star Wars cinematic universe every day, it could be a long while before we see any of our galactic heroes back on the silver screen.
